I think this guy makes some really good points (here) about why the military is dwindling unable to recruit at rates to cover attrition (here), and having serious issues retaining people at the end of their contracts forcing both massive enlistment and reenlistment bonuses (here).
I also think that all of this ignores the elephant in the room. There is a very large minority of Americans numbering around 80 million that believe they were disenfranchised and had an election stolen out from under them in 2020. This is exacerbated by the fact that it was essentially declared the most fair and secure election in history while shouting down any questions about it and not actually conducting any real official investigation. Even after several independent investigators discovered massive amounts of circumstantial evidence that might be real evidence or direct evidence if investigated by authorities go ignored.
These see their fellow Americans held as political prisoners for years without due process because of January 6th as more and more evidence surfaces that the Federal Agents were inciting violence on one side of the building and Capitol Police were letting people in and escorting them through the building on the other side. The more information that comes to light the fishier it smells.
These 80 million people saw the Durham report that found the national security apparatus knowingly worked in illegally in concert with a political campaign in an effort to damage a rival campaign. They see all this evidence yet there are no consequences. These people watched for two years as their President was beset by the main stream media and impeached over obviously false claims with ridiculously petty intentions.
Now they see an Man whom they believe stole the White house suffer from mental decline on national TV weekly, who has appears to have clearly committed high crimes, and bragged about an offence their candidate was impeached for receive nothing but accolades. All this while his family is not punished after being convicted of a felony that routinely sees ordinary people in prison for years.
Now ask yourself whose kids join the armed forces? Who historically encouraged service and has family traditions of military service? Might the fall in recruitment be that the primary source doesn’t believe that the government isn’t legitimate and the is nothing worth serving anymore. I think they have good reason to believe that.
Sadly, the lure of over $50K in bonuses and the fat post 911 GI Bill (much better deal than the old Montgomery GI Bill) seduced my second oldest son into joining the Army. He is my son and I love him and he is a grown man that needs to find his own way in life. I am not happy about this decision and he knew I wouldn’t be, and to be honest I know a lot of veterans between 25-55 and not a one of them would encourage their kids to join the military so the Wall Street journal has that part right if for the wrong reasons.
God Bless you

The breakdown in the military is just gut wrenching. Best of luck to your son, I pray his time there ends well.
One point: is it true that all 80,000 believe the election was stolen? Obviously, the whole thing stinks to high heaven, but not every Trump voter believes the election was actually stolen, per se.
