A Big Beautiful Poison Bill
Welcome once again, my dear readers, to the asylum. I am sad to say things are no less crazy now than they have been for the last couple of years. It does seem the courts have finally and correctly stopped Trump’s unilateral tariffing. As I pointed out a few weeks ago, issuing tariffs is not a power of the executive (here). I was saddened by the “Big Beautiful Budget Bills” passing of the house. Let us hope it doesn’t pass the Senate.
There are some excellent things in the bill that absolutely will be great for the working middle class and even the lower class. Unfortunately, candy-coating shit doesn’t change the fact that it is shit. Sadly, like with so many other things, the parasitic political class is using the few good things as talking points to gain the support of stupid, rabid, and uninformed people.
I completely support the requirements for the able-bodied to work to receive food stamps, making them more of a hand up, not hand out. I think cutting any taxes on anything is a good idea. So, no tax on social security, overtime, tips, and whatever else are all great things (here). The new verification requirements on Medicare are also a good thing. Current estimates are between 60-100 Billion dollars a year are lost due to Medicare fraud, a large portion being money paid to ineligible recipients (here and here). Stricter scrutiny of applications and qualification investigations are a good idea.
The problem comes in with the fact that the bill doesn’t cut anything but expands, unnecessarily, a ton of things. Trump has also chosen to fight with people like Thomas Massie and Rand Paul who he should be in lock step with. This was the chance to abolish the federal department of education as a failed experiment, codifying into law all the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) cuts,
defunding all provisions of the Patriot Act, Military Commissions Act, and other expensive and invasive police state legislation. He didn’t’ nor did he make even a token show fighting for them (here, here, and here).
For months we have heard about how trillions are going to get cut out of the federal leviathan, and for a short period of time it appeared that might be true. Unfortunately, when the rubber meets the road, it appears that we will get more of the same. This is one of the largest spending bills in American history adding between 2.5 and 5.5 trillion to the deficit (here, here, and here). It provides increases in infrastructure (no specified projects so mad money for the executive branch). While a strong military is important, the bill expands military spending by over 50 billion dollars. If Trump’s words were anything other than air, he would greatly reduce the deployment of American Troops to Europe (it is the only way they can pay their fair share), pulling out of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the United Nations. This would allow us to keep an extremely strong military for defense, while significantly cutting military spending.
Right now, America spends more on the military than the rest of the top ten combined, and even if we cut that budget by 50% we would still spend more than the rest of the top five combined. We could easily do this by pulling out of foreign entanglements and forcing Europe especially to defend itself. I find it interesting that American tax payers contribute as much money to the defense of Europe than all of the nations of Europe combined and America pays for 66% of all NATO (here, here, and here). To make matters worse, most, if not all, of Europe is descending into tyranny, unworthy of defense, at a rapid rate. Freedom of speech and expression are all but gone, the wrong candidate gets elected and they toss out the election, if an opposition party is gaining too much support they must be removed as an option by the establishment (here, here, here, here, and here). Why in the world would we want to spend hundreds of billions of dollars a year to secure nations that are so clearly falling into the type of tyranny we are supposed to keep the world safe from (Note: I don’t think we should keep the world safe from anything. Just ourselves)?
The bill expands spending on several other fronts like stupid Trump accounts where every child gets a savings account that the government puts $1000 into and the parents can contribute up to 5K a year tax free. Then, when the child is 18 they can use the funds for education, a house, or to start a business. First, we as a nation can’t afford this, second this isn’t something the government has the right to do under the constitution, and third most states already have tax exempt college savings plans that parents can enroll in if they choose.
Beyond all the stupidly excessive spending, there are other things in the bill. For example, this bill has a provision preventing any state from passing any regulation regarding artificial intelligence. Leaving that entirely up to the federal government, while also spending a ton of money to support AI development (here and here). The AI industry doesn’t need taxpayer money as the potential economic upside, if done correctly, is massive. So, there is plenty of private money. The only thing tax funding will do is encourage more risk as it removes the penalties for failure (It’s not my money). Second, leaving all of the regulation of AI to the federal government eliminates State’s ability to protect their people, and we will need protection. Since the advent of the Patriot Act, Military Commissions Act, and other knee jerk post 9/11 legislation, the government has been illegally collecting every call, email, text, social media message, and other electronic communication sent by Americans. They are after the hero Edward Snowden just because he told the American people that the government was breaking the law (here and here). This was bad, but due to the limits of indexing and search technology it was impossible for the government to properly sift through the massive amounts of data collected. Unless a person was specifically targeted, the odds of them being found out in the mass of data were low, but not zero. This also resulted in many people being visited over false positive “hits” as well (here and here). Unfortunately, the advent of AI changes all of this. AI will and probably has allowed the government to monitor in context all of that communication in real time. It is the end of “The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.” The government will just snatch it up real time and your location too. This bill essentially puts control of AI entirely into the hands of the Federal Government and allows for no opposition to it supremacy on the topic. That alone is enough reason to oppose this bill.
